Carpool / VanpoolSharing a ride to work-in a carpool or vanpool-is called ridesharing. Ridesharing reduces the number of cars on the road making for lighter rush hour traffic, reducing pollution due to auto emissions, and reducing the need for parking. Poolers can qualify for preferred and/or reduced parking, receive discounts on auto insurance, and save wear and tear on their vehicles. Most importantly, instead of driving alone, poolers can relax, read a book, or catch up on personal or business matters while commuting to work. A Carpool is a group of 2-5 people who commute together, in a private vehicle, at least three or more days a week. Carpooling is flexible, cost effective, and energy efficient. Carpools are also eligible to use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.
A Vanpool is a group of 5-15 people who commute together, in a designated van, at least three days a week. One person volunteers to be the driver and coordinate the van. Vanpoolers may be eligible to receive Federal tax incentives and employer subsidies. The vanpool's fixed monthly expense is determined by the number of people in the vanpool and the number of miles driven.
The Anoka County TMO can provide a list of car or vanpooling commuters that are traveling the same route to school or work around the same time.
