The Department of Property Records and Public Service is the repository for land records in the county and is responsible for the accurate and official recording of various land-related transactions and ownership certification. Such recording and filing provides for the security of public records which is vital to the ongoing determination of property ownership. This area also has the responsibility of staffing the public counter and information area for walk-in business and conducts tax-forfeited land sales.

Taxation Services structures the property base of Ad Valorem Taxation, special assessment and record ownership. This department administers the distribution of the property tax levy, the liability settlement and the enforcement portion of the "Fiscal Disparities" law for the seven-county metropolitan area. Also, the department collects real estate, mobile home and personal property taxes for distribution to cities, school districts and other units according to statutes.

Property Assessment Department

Property Assessment Services is responsible for the assurance of a high degree of equality in the assessment levels between the various towns and municipalities throughout the county, as well as the ongoing improvement of the parcel equalization. Specific functions include appraisal and assessment in contract districts; statistical analysis of assessment ratios; assistance to municipalities; court appearances regarding assessment matters; and advising the county board on levels of assessment equalization services.
