Continuances on Criminal Cases

Continuance requests for criminal case hearings may come in writing or by phone.  See below for specific directions.

  • Continuances are NOT granted on the day of the hearing, and must be made at least two days before the hearing.
  • If you have an attorney, contact your attorney about the continuance request before calling Court Administration.
  • Requests may be handled differently depending on the severity of the charged offense(s).
  • Court Administration may grant one continuance per case.

Felony Jury Trials

  • A request to continue a felony jury trial occurring more than 30 days from trial should be made by motion.  A motion hearing will then be scheduled.  Contact the Assignment Division by phone at 763-422-7364 for a motion date.
  • A request to continue a felony jury trial occurring within 30 days from the trial date should be made in writing to the scheduled trial judge, with opposing counsel copied on the written request.    Direct this request to Court Assignments and it will be routed to the trial judge.

Arraignments

Court Administration may grant one continuance over the phone at 763-422-7385 for an arraignment, for a period of up to 30 days.
