Continuances on Criminal Cases
Continuance requests for criminal case hearings may come in writing
or by phone. See below for specific directions.
- Continuances are NOT granted on the day of the hearing, and must
be made at least two days before the hearing.
- If you have an attorney, contact your attorney about the
continuance request before calling Court Administration.
- Requests may be handled differently depending on the severity of
the charged offense(s).
- Court Administration may grant one continuance per case.
Felony Jury Trials
- A request to continue a felony jury trial occurring more
than 30 days from trial should be made by motion. A motion
hearing will then be scheduled. Contact the Assignment Division by
phone at 763-422-7364 for a motion date.
- A request to continue a felony jury trial occurring within
30 days from the trial date should be made in writing to the
scheduled trial judge, with opposing counsel copied on the
written request. Direct this request to Court Assignments and it
will be routed to the trial judge.
Arraignments
Court Administration may grant one continuance over the phone
at 763-422-7385 for an arraignment, for a period of up to 30 days.
